Dr Jeremy Bell of Campion College will be presenting the October 2021 Talk!

1900 (7:00 pm) – Divine Liturgy
2000 (8:00 pm) – Talk + Q&A – “What is Truth? Why Pontius Pilate Should Have Studied Philosophy”

When our Lord told Pontius Pilate that he came into the world to testify to the truth, Pilate famously retorted, “what is truth?” Like many people today, Pilate distrusted the very word “truth”. He apparently doubted that human beings could ever escape the prison of their desires, passions, and prejudices and know things as they really are. He was what we would now call a “relativist”.
Philosophy, the “love of wisdom”, is the attempt to do what Pilate thought could not be done: to grasp the truth. Philosophy seeks to answer life’s most important questions. What is the world like? What is good? Is there a life after death? Does God exist? This talk will look at how philosophy can help us to overcome relativism.
