Hello! I am Ed Sri and I want to give you something to think about.
What does it mean to really follow Jesus? What does it look like in your life?
I mean not just to be a Catholic, not just to be a rah-rah enthusiastic Catholic, not just even be an Orthodox Catholic that believes all the right things and does all the right things.
What’s happening on the inside in your relationship with Jesus? Are you really following him as a disciple?
You know sometimes we as Catholics can pat ourselves on the back for being faithful and Orthodox. We follow the rules and that’s a wonderful thing. We need to do that. That’s absolutely essential to follow what Jesus Christ has taught us but he’s inviting us to do so much more.
You see if I was a soccer player and I told you, “I’m an awesome soccer player I deserve to be in the World Cup,” and you said, “Wow, what makes you, Edward Sri, such a great soccer player?” And I said, “It’s because I’m really, really good at following the rules. Would that make it for me, to be on the World Cup team? I don’t use my hands I never get handballs, I never get yellow cards, I stay inbounds, I stay on side, just following the rules.”
Does that make you a great soccer player? No, that’s just the beginning point. That’s just permission to play.
As Catholics, sometimes we can fall into the trap of thinking, I go to Mass on Sunday, I throw money in the basket and I follow the rules, I believe the Magisterial teachings. Again, all crucial, very important but we’ve got to see that’s just the beginning, that’s just permission to play.
Jesus doesn’t just want us to follow rules. He wants to change us. He wants our hearts. He wants us to follow him with all of our heart, mind, and soul.
We’re called to be Saints! So, my friends, we want to consider our own lives.
Do I really walk with Jesus?
Am I striving to imitate him, to think like Him, to love like him, to serve like him?
Am I growing in virtue?
Am I growing in love in my marriage, in my parenting and my friendships, in my prayer life?
That’s the sign of a disciple!
That’s just something to think about!
